After Rain Damages Mercado, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger’s main signage will be coming down as well.
EL PASO, Texas — As El Pasoans Fighting Hunger addresses damage from Tuesday’s rain, the food bank is asking for community support to meet facility needs, including repairing damaged Mercado canopies and removing its main EPFH sign.
The September 22 rain damaged two Mercado canopies and forced distribution to close at 2 p.m. Neighbors still waiting for food were sent home empty-handed.
The storm’s aftermath brings renewed attention to the costs of maintaining the spaces where neighbors receive help. In addition to the canopy damage, EPFH’s main sign was inspected and also needs to be removed. The building’s front entrance is now closed as a precaution due to the sign.
These needs come with expenses that add to the daily cost of keeping food moving to families across the Borderland. Canopies, signage, and facility upkeep may not be the first things people associate with hunger relief, but they are part of maintaining a welcoming, functional place for neighbors to turn.
EPFH welcomes support from businesses and community members who can assist with canopy repairs or replacement, sign removal, or replacement signage.
