El Pasoans Fighting Hunger will join food banks across the country in recognizing National Food Bank Day on Friday, September 4, honoring the people, partnerships and community support that make hunger-relief efforts possible.
National Food Bank Day is observed annually on the first Friday of September. It recognizes the critical role food banks play in collecting, sorting, storing and distributing food to individuals and families facing hunger.
That work is especially important in the Borderland, where approximately 40% of El Paso County residents experience food insecurity.
El Pasoans Fighting Hunger serves as the regional food bank for El Paso, Hudspeth and Culberson counties. The organization distributes food directly to neighbors through its onsite Mercado and Food FARMacy while also supplying a network of community partners, including churches, schools and nonprofit organizations.
Behind every meal is work most people never see. Food must be collected or rescued, transported, inspected, sorted, stored and delivered throughout the region before it reaches a neighbor’s table. National Food Bank Day recognizes the staff, volunteers, donors and community partners who keep that system moving.
The observance also comes during Hunger Action Month, giving Borderland residents several opportunities to support the fight against hunger throughout September:
- September 11: Villalobos Pest Control Golf Tournament benefiting El Pasoans Fighting Hunger.
- September 14–26: Chick-fil-A cookie fundraiser at participating Mesa Street, Remcon and Desert Boulevard locations.
- September 24: Fourth Annual Noche de Estrellas Reverse Gala and the opening of the Hunger Action Month silent auction.
- September 25: El Paso Locomotive FC fundraising game, with members of the EPFH team serving as honorary conductors.
- September 29: Hunger Action Day and plans to light El Paso’s Star on the Mountain orange.
- September 30: Final day of the Hunger Action Month silent auction.
Community members can recognize National Food Bank Day by volunteering, making a donation, organizing a food drive or simply helping share the message that hunger is much closer than many people realize.
