The El Paso Museum of History announces the lecture: War and Politics in Rome: Caesar’s Conquest of Gaul on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 2-3 p.m. This event is open and free to the public. The exhibit Julius Caesar: Military Genius & Mighty Machines will be open until Saturday, January 10, 2015.
The lecture will begin in the year 58 BCE. Without the sanction of the Roman Senate, Julius Caesar crossed into Gaul and halted the migration of the Gallic Helvetii as they approached Italy. He went on to conquer much of what is now France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the process Caesar revolutionized the place of the army in the political system of Rome. This talk will consider how Caesar’s military actions in Gaul changed Roman society and brought down the Roman Republic.
