KIDS TIRE EASILY AS THEY PROGRESS THROUGH PUBERTY

Posted on 19. Aug, 2010 by admin.

QUESTION: My thirteen-year-old daughter has become increasingly lazy in the past couple of years. She lies around the house and will sleep half a day on Saturday. She complains about being tired a lot. Is this typical of early adolescence? How should I deal with it?
DR. DOBSON: It is not uncommon for boys and girls to experience fatigue during the years of puberty. Their physical resources are being invested in a rapid growth process during that time, leaving less energy for other activities. This period doesn’t last very long and is usually followed by the most energetic time of life.

THE CULTURE AT LARGE AFFECTS QUALITY OF KIDS’ EDUCATION

Posted on 06. Aug, 2010 by admin.

QUESTION: You’ve been somewhat critical of America’s public schools in recent years. Who do you hold accountable for what has gone wrong?
DR. DOBSON: I share the concern of many others about falling test scores, increasing violence on campuses, and the high illiteracy rate, among other serious problems with today’s schools. But I am not quick to blame educators for everything that has gone wrong.

QUESTION: Talk about a father’s impact on his daughter and what he should hope to accomplish through that relationship.
DR. DOBSON: Fathers have an incalculable impact on their daughters. Most psychologists believe, and I am one of them, that all future romantic relationships are influenced positively or negatively by the way a girl interacts with her dad in the childhood years.

PARENTS MUST MAKE TIME FOR THEIR REBELLIOUS TEENS

PARENTS MUST MAKE TIME FOR THEIR REBELLIOUS TEENS

Posted on 23. Jul, 2010 by admin.

Question: Teenage rebellion has hit our home at last. My 15-year-old son’s rotten attitude just went from bad to worse! How do I get him through the “rapids” of adolescence without rocking the boat any more than absolutely necessary?
DR. DOBSON: First of all, you need to recognize that the trial you’re facing is “common to man.” Adolescent revolt is hormonally driven and occurs in the best of families. When hostility and rebellion begin to appear, how do you keep your boys (and girls) from blowing up and doing something stupid?

KIDS MISBEHAVE IN PUBLIC, TESTING PARENTS’ COMPOSURE

QUESTION: My three-year-old can be counted on to behave like a brat whenever we are in the mall or in a restaurant. He seems to know I will not punish him there in front of other people. How should I handle this tactic?

DR. DOBSON: Let me answer you with an illustration from nature. They tell me that a raccoon can usually kill a dog if he gets him in a lake or river. He will simply pull the hound underwater until he drowns.

GIRLS WITH ADHD MAY NOT BE HYPERACTIVE

GIRLS WITH ADHD MAY NOT BE HYPERACTIVE

QUESTION: My daughter has some of the symptoms commonly associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but she is a very quiet child. Are some ADHD kids withdrawn and sedate?

DR. DOBSON: Yes. ADHD is not always associated with hyperactivity, especially in girls. Some of them are “dreamy” and detached. Regrettably, they are sometimes called “airheads” or “space cadets”. Such a child can sit looking at a book for forty-five minutes without reading a word.

FOCUS ON EARLY CHILDHOOD KEY TO INTELLECTUAL PROGRESS

Posted on 02. Jul, 2010 by admin.

QUESTION: We have a one-year-old daughter and we want to raise her right. I’ve heard that parents can increase the mental abilities of their children if they stimulate them properly during the early years. Is this accurate, and if so, how can I accomplish this with my baby?
DR. DOBSON: Research has shown that parents can, indeed, increase the intellectual capability of their children. This conclusion was first reached through the renowned Harvard University Preschool Project. A team of researchers led by Dr. Burton White studied young children aged eight to eighteen months over a ten-year period, hoping to discover which experiences in the early years of life contribute to the development of healthy, intelligent human beings. The results of this important study are summarized below.

QUESTION: Is there a way I as a father can influence my daughter’s attitude toward boys? If she chooses to marry, she will need to understand men and know how to relate to them. Is that something I should be thinking about?

DR. DOBSON: You bet it is. Long before a girl finds her first real boyfriend or falls in love, her attitude toward men has been shaped quietly by her father. Why? Because the father-daughter relationship sets the stage for all future romantic involvements.

REWARDS CAN BE A USEFUL WAY TO INFLUENCE CHILDREN

Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by admin.

QUESTION: Previously you addressed the use of rewards in influencing kids. Isn’t a mother manipulating the child by using rewards and punishment to get him to do what she wants?

DR. DOBSON: No more than a factory supervisor manipulates his employees by docking their pay if they arrive late. No more than a policeman manipulates a speeding driver by giving him a traffic ticket.

Children are growing taller today than in the past

Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.

QUESTION: Children seem to be growing up at a younger age today than in the past. Is this true, and if so, what accounts for their faster development?
DR. DOBSON: Yes, it is true. Statistical records indicate that our children are growing taller today than in the past, probably resulting from better nutrition, medicine, exercise, rest and recreation.

FOCUS ON THE FAMILY with Dr. James Dobson

QUESTION: I have heard you say that we have shamefully mismanaged the present generation of children. Explain what you meant by that.

DR. DOBSON: I was referring to the many harmful influences that previous generations didn’t have to confront — at least not to the degree that we see today. That includes safe-sex ideology and violence and sexual imagery in movies, rock music and television; it refers to gang activity and drug abuse, and many other dangerous aspects of the culture.
