Lynx Exhibits Camp Registration Open
Registration is underway for a summer full of themed, fun-filled camps for 6- to 12-year-olds at Lynx Exhibits, 300 W. San Antonio Downtown.
The summer sessions begin with Blast From the Past and Camp Cretaceous on June 11, 2012, and end with Blast From the Past and Craft-A-Palooza the week of August 13, 2012. Lynx also offers Earth Day Every Day four weeks throughout the summer. Lynx offers a variety of educational experiences all summer and is one of the few institutions in El Paso to offer camp on Mondays.
“We know parents need to plan for the full work-week so it made sense to extend our camps to five days. Each day offers a different challenge, craft and activity so children never have a chance to be bored,” said Deborah Chaney, Lynx Education Director.
Camps are $100 each, with discounts for multiple camps and multiple children. Military families get an additional discount. Pick from morning or afternoon sessions which alternate through the summer between the four camps. Earth Day Every Day investigates the environment and recycling featuring crafts of recycled materials and a solar oven. Blast From the Past includes the best activities from our most popular camps of the past, including gross-out biology, insects, pirates, ancient Egypt and world cultures.
In Camp Cretaceous, children will make erupting volcanoes and dino eggs, plus other crafty croc projects. Craft-A-Palooza is a beehive of activity with make and take tons of creative crafts with beads, sun catchers, Shrinky-Dinks, papier-maché and more!
More information and registration forms are available online at www.LynxExhibits.com or by calling 533-4330.

The El Paso Museum of Archaeology Summer Camps Still Open
9 am to Noon, Tuesdays through Fridays on the following dates:
For ages 7 to 9 years/Entering Grades 2-4: June 12 to 15 and July 10 to 13
For ages 10 to 12 years/Entering Grades 5-7: June 26 to 29 and July 24 to 27
The El Paso Museum of Archaeology still has space available in all archaeology camps. These camps are popular with children, as shown by the children who have taken the camps a second time as they get older. Yet this year the museum finds it difficult to reach potentially interested families. The expense of large ads exceeds our budget. Thus we are asking the public to pass the word to families with children ages 7 to 12 who are interested in the 14,000 years of prehistory in El Paso and learning about the archaeological techniques that help us find out about the ancient past. The camp registration fee is $55 for El Paso Museum of Archaeology members and $70 for non-members. Registration is accepted on a first-come first-served basis as attendance is limited to twelve students per camp. For information and the camp registration form contact the museum at 915-755-4332 orguidamr@elpasotexas.gov.

DJ Metric has already garnered a great deal of attention within the entertainment industry. Yet, the
hollywood spotlight has not jaded this young professional, who still focuses on the fundamentals of
good DJing including; beat matching, scratching & most importantly song selection. An avid music

Vikki Carr is one of the bestloved and most accomplished entertainers in the United States, Latin America and Europe. This year marks the fifth decade of a career in which she has won three Grammy Awards and has released over 60 bestselling recordings. She has performed for the Queen of England, five United States Presidents, wartime soldiers in Vietnam and soldout audiences around the world. She has worked in radio, television, film and theater. Her music embraces two languages and she is among the first artists to bridge the cultures of the United States and Latin America, paving the way for many performers today.
Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Southern California, Vikki Carr, the eldest of seven children, began performing at the tender age of four singing Adeste Fidelis in Latin at a Christmas program. She was signed to a contract with Liberty Records in 1961. She recorded He ‘s A Rebel, which first became a hit in Australia. That title was soon followed by the unforgettable release, It Must Be Him, which charged up the charts in England. One year later, the single was released in the United States and earned Carr three Grammy Award nominations. The international hit emerged again when she and the song were featured in the storyline of the Academy Award winning movie Moonstruck. After It Must Be Him came a string of hits including With Pen In Hand, for which she received her fourth Grammy Award nomination,
The Lesson, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You and For Once in My Life. In 2008 she was awarded Lifetime Achievement Honors by the Latin American Grammy Foundation.
The diversity of her rich voice is impressive. She can belt out the blues or touch the heart with a soft romantic ballad. Frank Sinatra said, “She possesses my kind of voice”, Dean Martin called her “the best girl singer in the business” and Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald named her among their three favorite female singers of all time. Elvis Presley was also very fond of her and even remarked on stage in Las Vegas many times that Vikki Carr was one of his favorite singers and that he liked her because ”she sang from the gut” and introduced her at many of his personal appearances in which she attended.
Vikki Carr has received too many prestigious awards to list. In addition to the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, these honors include the 2005 National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Lifetime Achievement Award, 2003 Latino Spirit Award, 2003 Tito Guizar Award, 2002 Trefoil Award, 2000 Inductee, Latino Legends Hall of Fame, 1998 Imagen Foundation “Humanitarian Award, 1996 Hispanic Heritage Award, 1988 Nosotros Golden Eagle Award, 1984 Hispanic Woman of the Year, 1981 Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 1974 Doctorate in Law from San Diego University and Doctorate in Fine Arts from St. Edwards University, 1972 American Guild of Variety Artist’s “Entertainer of the Year”, and the Los Angeles Times’ highly respected “Woman of the Year” for 1970. She has earned the career achievement award of the Association of Hispanic Critics, Chicago’s Ovation Award, the YWCA Silver Achievement Award and was honored in 1990 by the City of Hope with the Founder of Hope Award. In 1991, she was presented the Girl Scouts of America Award.
Respected as both an artist and a humanitarian, she devotes time to many charities including The United Way, The American Lung Association, Cancer Therapy and Research Center, The Muscular Dystrophy Association and St Jude’s Hospital. For 22 years she held benefit concerts to support Holy Cross High School in San Antonio. In 1971 Vikki established the Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to offering college scholarships to Latino students in California and Texas. To date, the Foundation has awarded more than 280 scholarships totaling over a quarter of a million dollars. “My voice is a gift and a gift is nothing unless you can share it. The Foundation is one of the ways that I am able to share my gift,” said Carr. “The Foundation seeks to help young Mexican-American students achieve their goals through a college education, something I myself was never able to do.”
2010 marks the fifth decade of this highly successful and multi-faceted career. To mark this accomplishment she has teamed with mariachi master Mr. Jose Hernandez and his Mariachi Sol De Mexico (www.soldemexicoonline.com) to produce a 50th Anniversary Album. The recording includes new songs as well as recognizable standards featuring lush string and vocal arrangements by Mr. Hernandez.
DAVID HANDEL, CONDUCTOR CANDIDATE #2,
LEADS EL PASO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND EL PASO AUDIENCE FAVORITE, CLASSICAL GUITARIST PEPE ROMERO, IN LATIN PROGRAM
El Paso, Texas – David Handel, EPSO Conductor Candidate #2, will take the baton on October 21 and 22, 2011, 7:30pm at the Plaza Theatre and lead the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and guest soloist Pepe Romero, guitar, in a Latin program including: Lopez-Buchardo’s Escenas Argentinas, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with Pepe Romero, and Berlioz’ Fantastic Symphony: An Episode in the Life of an Artist. “I am really delighted to have the opportunity to work with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra on so wonderful a program and with the renowned Pepe Romero, surely the definitive soloist for the Concierto de Aranjuez. High-energy crowds covered in neon glowing outfits packed the Sun City Music Festival to experience the loud thumping and pulsating beats of local and international DJs Sept. 3-4 at Cohen Stadium.
“It was great music festival. It was fun and we had world class Dj’s come to us,” said, Charles Liming, who was one of the first people to enter the event. “El Paso showed up to support the festival and to help bring many more like this. It was a massively successful event.”
The two-day event featured more than 30 artists with the performances starting at 6 p.m. and lasting until 2 a.m. with three stages set up around Cohen Stadium with non-stop performances on each stage throughout the night. While the official attendances numbers have yet to be released, thousands of El Pasoans turned up to take in the sights and sounds.
The opening day of the festival was highlighted by performance by Armin Van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden and Afrojack. Armin Van Buuren closed out the night on the main stage with his performance making the crowd go wild with them jumping and dancing to his sounds throughout his set.
“My favorite performance had to be Armin Van Buren, the man is a genius,” said HYPERLINK “http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=576616262” Julio Vargas, an aspiring DJ who took the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the best DJs around the world. “Great music and great feel for the crowd. A perfect way to end the first night.”
Afrojack’s performance garnished one of the biggest crowds of the festival with the artist tapping in to material from his yet-to-be-released new album. The duo from San Francisco, Gabriel and Dresden, put on the most energetic and crowd pleasing session of the first night.
“Gabriel and Dresden were just amazing,” Liming said. “They had me dancing and jumping the whole time. The whole crowd was very in to them. It was electric.”
The second day of the festival was highlighted by performances by Crystal Castles, Paul Van Dyk and Sander Van Doorn.
“Sunday was awesome. It was a beautiful cloudy night filled with great music. Crystal Castles was one of my favorites,” said Krystal Rivera, who danced the night away. “Everyone went crazy trying to get a good spot. It was definitely energetic, I couldn’t stop dancing.”
Some of the local artists that got a chance to showcase their talents were Esteban Carrasco, Jay Hernandez, Midnight Response Saturday and Bulletproof Tiger.
“We not only got to see great internationally famous DJs, but the concert showcased some of the rising talent in our local house music scene,” said Irma Almanza, who saw Carrasco perform at both Sun City Music Festival and Minerpalooza. “So this concert was great for young artist here in El Paso.”
After the success of the Sun City Music Festival, El Pasoans are hoping this event will become a staple of the city and will encourage other big house music concerts to come to the Sun City.
“With the way we showed up to this event, I was proud to be an El Pasoan,” Liming said. “We showed we can handle festivals like this and will support them. Bring them on.”

For the first time in history, El Paso will host a large-scale music festival boasting over 30 of the world’s most famous electronic music artists on three stages this Labor Day weekend. The festival will be held at Cohen Stadium on September 3rd and 4th.
The line up is almost a who’s who of electronic music artists with the likes of Dutch producer and DJ Armin Van Buuren, who’s been voted the #1 DJ in the world 4 times in a row and has played in some of the world’s largest events including in Amsterdam where he preformed for 200,000 people. Paul Van Dyk, who is a Grammy nominated DJ and producer and was also ranked as the #1 DJ in the world twice before. Afrojack, a current in demand DJ and producer working with the artists such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kid Cudi, David Guetta, Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull and many more. Some of the other artists at this years Sun City Music Festival include; Chuckie, Crystal Castles, Cosmic Gate, Gabriel & Dresden, Sidney Samson, Chris Lake and more. One of the big attractions happening on Sunday will be the DayGlow Blu, a show billed as the “World’s Largest Paint Party”.
The festival also wanted to showcase El Paso’s local talent and will be giving the spotlight to; Bulletproof Tiger, Johnny Kage, DJ Rich, Alftron Blkmth, Esteban Carrasco, The DA, Jay Hernandez, DJ Panda and Astrodudes.
Promoters for the festival (SMG Events) are well known regionally for brining some of the top electronic music artists in the world to El Paso on a regular basis, selling out local venues each time. This past May SMG Events hosted the Tiesto Live event at Cohen Stadium, which drew a crowd of nearly 10,000 fans. The Sun City Music Festival hopes to ride on the coat tails of this success as promoters are expecting 10,000 – 15,000 each day. “Our focus is to bring something this massive to El Paso not just for the music lovers and to ensure the event is a success, but to entice people in other cities to come get a taste of our city and see what a great place it is to visit. There is so much culture and history in El Paso and the only way people from elsewhere will see that, is if we draw them in with things that they can’t get in their own city. Once we have them here, they won’t be able to help but fall in love with the Sun City. We expect attendees to support our local economy Labor Day weekend and come back to visit us every year.” stated Alby Bocanegra, Business and Media Relations Representative for SCMF.
As if that’s not enough SMG Events (SCMF) has aligned with The El Paso Police Foundation and will donate a portion of each ticket sold to the EPPF. “We (SCMF Organizers) appreciate and fully support our uniformed officers that are out risking their lives protecting out streets. If through this festival we can assist by donating funds that would provide a vest that could potentially save even one officer’s life then it’s worth our efforts. We’re proud of our city’s ranking as the safest city in the nation and if we can make a small impact on the officer’s quality of life that helped us earn that ranking then we are all for it.” stated Bocanegra. Another alliance is with The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department where a percentage of ticket sales will be donated to programs geared toward bringing music and arts to the children of our community.
Tickets for SCMF can be purchased at www.groovetickets.com or locally at The Headstand and All That Music.

Saturday & Sunday Cohen Stadium 9700 Gateway North Blvd. El Paso, TX 6pm – 2amThe University of Texas at El Paso will celebrate its 21st annual Minerpalooza, the campus’ largest and loudest pep rally, on Sept. 2.
Minerpalooza will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight in the center of campus, near University Avenue and Hawthorne Street. The kick-off bash celebrates the beginning of the school year and all UTEP athletic programs, including the start of the new football season.
On Sept. 3, the Miner football team faces off against the Seawolves of Stony Brook University, located in Stony Brook, N.Y. It will be the first time the teams meet on the field.
“We celebrate all athletics; we celebrate all students coming back to campus,” said Charlie Gibbens, director of residence life at UTEP and chair of the Minerpalooza committee. “This is a chance for us to say welcome back to the entire University and El Paso community.”
For 21 years, the annual back-to-school tradition has welcomed the community with one of the biggest fundraising events for student organizations on campus. Admission is free and open to the public. Tickets for games and food will be available for purchase.
The event offers live entertainment, inflatables for children, a kids’ zone, a carnival and a pep rally with Coach Mike Price, President Diana Natalicio, Paydirt Pete, the UTEP Cheerleaders and the Golddiggers. Entertainment will be provided by bands Del Rio, Red City Blue, Frontera Bugalú, and DJs Esteban Carrasco and Johnny Kage.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to come out. You get to be up and close with the football team. You get to be up close and meet the president,” Gibbens said. “This event really helps students get a really good understanding of what the University is about.”
This is an opportunity for students to bring their families to campus to show them where they spend most of their time, said Erika Portillo, a student development coordinator and one of the organizers of Minerpalooza.
Excitement for Minerpalooza starts during welcome back week, said Portillo, who has been involved with organizing the event for five years.
“The football season is about to start; for freshman, they don’t know what to expect,” she said. “I think the anticipation of a new season, new school year and new event (Minerpalooza) is exciting for them. We have returning students that have been to it in years past and they come back because they know there are so many people, so much activity, music and food.”
