San Elizario has hundreds of years of history, dating back to 1598, it has had much time to collect ghosts. Walking along Main Street is like stepping back in time unchanged. Whispers can be heard from the art galleries to the chapels & majestic missions, and the old jail that Billy the Kid broke into in 1876 still stands and is filled with its own share of spirits. It is not uncommon for guests to see apparitions, hear voices, and even feel the touch of unseen spirits. The spirits are at home here. This is a very powerful area with a deep history.

Where it all began…
In 1978, EL PASO DEL NORTE was reborn as VIVA! EL PASO, with a new production concept, energy and director —Hector Serrano. He conceived, staged and directed VIVA! EL PASO, which has entertained audiences for close to four decades.
In 1979, the second season, Mr. Serrano wrote: “There’s nothing else around like VIVA! EL PASO. Quite often our biggest problem is finding a ‘label’ for the production. VIVA! is an ‘outdoor drama,’ but it isn’t. VIVA! Is a ‘pageant,’ but then again, not quite. It’s an ‘historical drama,’ but it’s not; and it’s an ‘outdoor musical,’ (and, once again, not).
The next season he wrote:
“VIVA! EL PASO remains the greatest challenge of my lifetime. Paying homage to the Great American Southwest, providing local talent an opportunity to shine, developing a creative, entertaining, and a highly cultural production … such is the stuff this show is made of, and just like dreams, it does come true, every summer. I hope you enjoy it again, and again, and again.”
Through the years VIVA! EL PASO has not only entertained and captivated audiences from El Paso and the surrounding region, but has thrilled visitors and newcomers to our area as well. Many of El Paso’s finest performing artists have spent summers as ensemble members, directors, designers, choreographers, and technical crew. As Hector Serrano stated in a 1980 magazine article titled, “Promoting the Arts,” “VIVA! EL PASO continues to grow and change each year. … The secret to the success of VIVA! EL PASO is that it offers entertainment for the whole family.”
Now, as we come out of a life-altering pandemic, VIVA! EL PASO takes wings as the focal project for El Paso International & Cultural Arts (EPIC Arts). The last few years have seen new contributions from Tony award-winning playwright Marty Martin and composer/songwriters Jim Ward and Cody Ritchey. We will continue adding brilliant original material, continue to train and allow-to-shine young El Paso talent, and continue to entertain families and newcomers alike.
Going on our 45th season it is still true…“There’s nothing else around like VIVA! EL PASO”!!
Looking forward to seeing all of you in McKelligon Canyon this summer!

The 28th Annual Silver City Blues Festival will take place May 27, 2023, Memorial Day weekend, at Gough Park in Silver City, NM. This year’s festival continues to be free for all to enjoy. It is supported by local businesses and individual blues lovers, and especially by donations from attendees.
The festival is pleased to present five great performers including:
•Dirty Red & the Soul Shakers, from OK, a lone weeping guitar, blues harmonica and soul filled vocals.
•Tyron Benoit Band, from New Orleans LA, a band as diverse as Cajun culture with a dash of Zydeco, a pinch of rock, and a sprinkle of Americano.
•Ghost Town Blues Band, from TN, a band that captivates their audience with cigar box guitars, electric push brooms, and a hip-hop trombone player.
The Mimbres Region Arts Council has been working hard to get everything ready for this event, all we need now is for you to come out and enjoy the festival and donate! The 2023 Blues Festival will have something for everyone – out of state and local performers, unique vendors from Silver City’s very own Makers Market, beer gardens provided by Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery and Q’s Bistro, and food/beverage vendors. The whole goal of the festival is to bring amazing entertainment to Silver City while supporting the local economy. While the Blues Festival is fun and exciting, there are many businesses that neighbor Gough Park that will still be open for business. Please stop in and say “Hi” and “Thank you” to them for cooperating with us to put this event together. Please respect their property and all signage posted.
Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy this free music festival. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Please come out and support the Mimbres Region Arts Council in its mission of nurturing a creative community and benefitting music programs in Grant County.

Motorcycle Rallies
For over 50 years, the village of Ruidoso in the southern mountains of New Mexico has hosted riders and enthusiasts for the Golden Aspen (Est. 1969) and AspenCash (Est. 1997) motorcycle rallies.
In 2018, Humberto and Blayne Maldonado’s father-son team, both long-time Ruidoso residents and Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally participants and supporters, took over from former owners.
The Maldonados worked hard to continue the rallies’ great tradition with new attractions and events, including live music and something for every motorcycle enthusiast.
