EL PASO, Texas –– El Paso will experience its very own Festival of Chariots which will feature a traditional parade of the ancient Ratha Yatra celebration. Guests will enjoy authentic Indian music/kirtan, theatrical performances, yoga, meditation/transcendental booths, gift shop, and a FREE vegetarian feast.
The El Paso Festival of Chariots will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2021 and will kick off at 12p.m. with the traditional Festival of Chariots (Ratha Yatra) parade, followed by a Festival of India celebration (food, music, meditation tents, etc.) at the parking lot located at 401 East Main Street (across the street from Hotel Indigo) in Downtown El Paso.
World-renowned kirtan band, Mayapuris will perform at the festival, along with theater performances by Prema Collective. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in yoga and meditation. All activities, food and performances are free to the public. Guests can shop for traditional Indian goods at the event.
The tradition of celebrating Ratha Yatra goes back thousands of years and is one of the most celebrated events in India and worldwide. Ratha Yatra is derived from two Sanskrit words, Ratha which means chariot or carriage, and j?tr? which means journey or pilgrimage. These Hindu festivals are an important element of Hare Krishna expression. The traditional chariots which will be featured at our El Paso parade have been designed and constructed over months in Los Angeles.
“We are so excited to introduce this special holiday, Ratha Yatra, to our El Paso community,” said festival organizer Madhi Nair. “We invite everyone to come to the festival on October 2 and to enjoy this cultural tradition, performances, food and activities; it’s going to be fun!”
