During a normal year, thousands of visitors would be flocking to Las Cruces this week for a unique New Year’s Eve celebration and tradition— the annual Downtown Las Cruces Partnership Chile Drop. Similar to the Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, the Chile Drop features a New Year countdown with a 19-foot long chrome chile decorated with 400 feet of programmed LED lighting.
Visitors and locals alike love the themed experience that pays homage to Las Cruces’ rich agricultural history and the world-renowned New Mexico red and green chile. This year, due to COVID-19, the celebration will take place virtually and without a physical audience. That means you can join the fun of the Chile Drop—wherever you may be this year.
To view the Chile Drop hosted by the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership, go to KVIA.com. Programming will begin at 11:55pm MST on December 31, 2020.
We hope you’ll join us in kicking off 2021, and we wish you a Happy New Year filled with hope, possibility, joy, and of course, chances to visit us and taste the world’s best chile!
