‘To the Manor Born’: Fashion for Weekends in the Country
By Sharon Mosley
The autumn leaves are falling, and nature is calling. When the weather turns cooler, it’s all about enjoying outdoors in the country and breathing in those fresh fall weekends. While jeans and sweaters are always ready to take a hike in the country, this season, fashion forecasters are predicting that weekend clothes will have more of a dressed-up appeal. Think “To the Manor Born” with a modern update.
Here are a few ways to get the new country vibe:
— Kick it up a notch. This fall, boots are big, big, big fashion statements. So, there are plenty of ways to step out for the weekend. Whether your boots are knee-high or ankle-high, make sure you can walk or hike in comfort; that usually means a flat heel or chunkier lug sole heel. Leave the stiletto heels at home. And don’t try to break in a pair of new boots on your first fall leaf tour. Those blisters will haunt you until Halloween.
— Get your denim on. If there were ever a weekend uniform, denim is it. Pack up lots of denim vests, jackets, jeans and, yes, even skirts if you plan to go out for a date night. Midi or mini, the denim skirt is a winner. Now that designers are touting the head-to-toe jeanswear look, it’s an easy way to piece together a getaway wardrobe that can be mixed and matched with your other favorites like leggings. Try adding a pop of color to your blue basics to keep things interesting.
— Go mad for plaid. A quintessential fall favorite, plaid is another versatile classic that pairs well with denim. Look for checkered plaids this season in a variety of colorful styles from jaunty puffer jackets to lumberjack shirts, and even full culottes. Cinch it all in with a wide, rustic belt and you’re set to go. Tartan plaid wool scarves are another great fall accessory and a great accent to denim.
— Add an oversized sweater. The knits are it this year. This fall, check out the argyle patterned sweaters right out of the ski lodge scene. Chunky, cable knit fisherman’s sweaters in creamy ivory are always a good “go-with-everything” piece, as are roomy turtlenecks. Longer, knee-length wrap blanket styles are other ways to give your denim gear instant panache. A serape style poncho or cape is another weekend winner.
— Dig the big bag. I know, I know, it’s a lot to carry … and you can always stash a smaller one inside a larger tote for those short day trips to the farm stands. But a larger satchel/crossbody/backpack in a lightweight cotton or canvas fabric can be a lifesaver when it comes to schlepping all your electronics and doing a little shopping — a great weekend pastime. One of this fall’s weekend favorites? The tan saddlebag.
— Finish with a few accessories. If you only buy one thing for your fall trip to the country, try a hat with personality, such as a cute bucket hat or a funky fedora. Then add a patterned scarf or a fuzzy faux fur muffler. Weekends, here we come!
