El Pasoans will soon be able to fine-tune their strategy, sharpen their skills, and learn larger-than life tactics associated with chess.
On September 16, 2013, Globe Builders, LLC, of El Paso, began construction on the 1.65 acre expansion of Yucca Park which will include new landscaping, new irrigation, pathways, picnic tables, four permanent chess tables, and an expansive new concrete colored chess board.
“The centerpiece of the chess courtyard is an oversized, human-scale chessboard,” said Carlos Adame, project manager for the City of El Paso’s Engineering and Construction Management Department. “If you had 32 people, they could actually play a life-size game of chess.”
The $1.1 million project is scheduled to conclude by February 2014. It is funded by the Quality of Life Bonds approved by voters in November of 2012.
