On Saturday, June 25, 2011, El Paso Community College, Valle Verde Campus, played host to Aliviane’s Recovery for Healthy Babies Walk and Health fair. Julie Priego Zapata, Director for Community Affairs for A.L.I.V.I.A.N.E., stated that the purpose of the health fair was so agencies that had served pregnant and post-partum parents could easier access these health care agencies. “There are teens and adults that do not know where to go for services. We have over 60 agencies here that have everything from summer programs to counseling centers.” The walk consisted of walking the athletic fields at EPCC. This was to remind participants that walking was one of the easiest and most important exercises that a woman can do to help her own health.
“Gypsy Rose”, spokesperson for the Sun City Pin-up Girls, said that even their group was there to support all the El Paso moms. Her group was selling items and face-painting to raise money, all funds going directly to Aliviane.
Emma Acosta, El Paso mayor pro-tem, said that “There are responsibilities that come with pregnancy. This is a fantastic way to have a one-stop shop for all these agencies that give you all the important resources that you would need.”
