Accuracy overcomes distance deficit

Golf is like life — when they give you lemons, you’ve got to make lemonade. When Calvin Peete fell out of a tree, the 11-year-old broke his left arm in three places and it never healed correctly, so his forearm couldn’t rotate. He played his first game of golf at 23 in 1966, then qualified for the PGA tour in 1973 and won 12 times.

THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by admin.
?This very funny Tony Award winning musical comedy, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, opened on Broadway where it delighted audiences, received critical acclaim, and earned three Drama Desk and two prestigious Tony Awards. The story focuses on six quirky young competitors at a spelling bee who learn that they don’t have to win to be winners. Three or four audience members are invited to take part of every performance as guest spellers, bringing the entire audience into the show. Another unique characteristic of the show is its heavy use of improvisation. For example, the Vice Principal, who provides words to the students, improvises a sentence for each word being spelled, as well as fun facts about the contestants including the guest audience members.

How to Handle a Kitchen Rehab: First Find an Expert
Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by admin.
Q: We have bought an apartment in an old building. It’s a local landmark, so we can’t change the exterior. But we do have permission to redo our own apartment, which is dark — there’s a lot of beautiful oak paneling that we’ll keep. I want a bright, open eat-in kitchen. What should I do first?
A: First step: Find yourself a qualified, creative interior designer who has had solid experience in rehabilitating kitchens. Unlike many other design projects, making over a kitchen requires a specialist’s skills.

REWARDS CAN BE A USEFUL WAY TO INFLUENCE CHILDREN
Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by admin.
QUESTION: Previously you addressed the use of rewards in influencing kids. Isn’t a mother manipulating the child by using rewards and punishment to get him to do what she wants?
DR. DOBSON: No more than a factory supervisor manipulates his employees by docking their pay if they arrive late. No more than a policeman manipulates a speeding driver by giving him a traffic ticket.

Horizon City Mayor: We love our community exactly the way it is
Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by admin.
From a bedroom community of only 2,000 people a little more than ten years ago, Horizon City has matured into a sprawling area of more than 13,000 inhabitants. The city is still growing, but, says Horizon City Mayor, Walter Miller, “as long we don’t grow too fast, and as long as that growth can be controlled.
“While growth is inevitable, and while I don’t see any way to stop the inevitable, still, we must ensure that our growth is controlled and that we don’t become a sprawling metropolis,” Miller said. “We need to develop it carefully so that or wonderful community continues being wonderful for those of us who live here.”

Hamlin & Busch Sparks still flyin’ Smoldering rancor over All-Star Race flares up at Coca-Cola 600
Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.
The dust-up between Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch in NASCAR’s All-Star Race continued to generate buzz well into the Coca-Cola 600 race weekend, with both drivers obviously far from putting the incident completely behind them.
They did manage to avoid each other on the track during the 600, but they had plenty to say beforehand.
During his regular meeting with the media on Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Busch fielded question after question about the incident late in the All-Star Race when Busch tried to pass Hamlin.

Perfect pitching: the Brain Fix
Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.
Last week I outlined how my student Paul fixed his pitching by adjusting his spine position, and his technique improved dramatically. But fixing the swing wasn’t the end of the story because even though Paul could now pitch the ball in practice, he still couldn’t pitch the ball very well on the golf course. There was one more fix to be performed — the brain fix.

Jewel to do Duet with Technology
Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.
Jewel didn’t try her luck at the gaming tables after her May 16 concert at Pechanga Casino in Temecula, Calif.
“I’m in the music business, so I figure I gamble enough,” said Jewel, the veteran singer-songwriter.
But Jewel, who recently turned 36, is happy to roll the dice to promote her new country-music album, “Sweet and Wild,” in a decidedly innovative manner. If it works, the Texas-based musician and her high-tech collaborators at Velocity Broadcasting may help provide a model for a struggling record industry desperate for creative marketing approaches in the digital age.

Frenchmen Can’t be Wrong About Their Favorite Furniture Style
Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.
Q: I spent my junior year in the south of France (Montpelier) and fell in love with French-style furniture (with everything French, but that’s beside the point). Now, my husband and I are furnishing our first home and I would like to create a French provincial theme. He’s not for it and says French furniture is too “effeminate.” Au secours!
A: “Help!” In any language, that’s what you need to bring your husband past his stereotypes

Children are growing taller today than in the past
Posted on 04. Jun, 2010 by admin.
QUESTION: Children seem to be growing up at a younger age today than in the past. Is this true, and if so, what accounts for their faster development?
DR. DOBSON: Yes, it is true. Statistical records indicate that our children are growing taller today than in the past, probably resulting from better nutrition, medicine, exercise, rest and recreation.
