Thrown for a curve Infineon race brings surprises in a season that’s been full of them

Even in the midst of a wacky Sprint Cup season, Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway stood out. That race might best be described as a combination of things one wouldn’t expect to see in an ordinary Sprint Cup Series race, even in the era when the boys have been told by series officials to “have at it.”
A driver closing in on his first career Cup win, with a dominant car and seemingly plenty of fuel in the tank, stalls the car in an uphill portion of the track, apparently trying to alternately cut his engine on and off to save gasoline. That driver, Marcos Ambrose, the almost always upbeat Australian, seemed deflated and crushed afterward.

A line in the sand

A line in the sand

While the photos might lead you to believe that this article is about sand play, it isn’t. At least not directly. It’s about where you should start your divot with any iron.
I chose to demonstrate this in a fairway bunker sand shot because it’s easy to see by the divot that I picked the ball cleanly before my clubhead continued down and forward. So the divot starts where the front of the ball used to b

SAFER TRAVELS – Secure pets are a better bet on the road

SAFER TRAVELS – Secure pets are a better bet on the road

Posted on 25. Jun, 2010 by .

The number of people who travel with their dogs is growing, and so too are the options for pets on the road. From “ruffing it” at campgrounds to enjoying fabulous four-star hotels, the time has never been better to pack up your pet and go.
Still, traveling with a dog is no picnic sometimes. Finding lodgings can be difficult, luxurious inside dining is largely sacrificed in favor of eating takeout in the car or a park, and spending hours tripping through quaint shops becomes a thing of the past when a dog is waiting. Traveling with dogs offers some challenges, but nearly all are surmountable with common sense and creativity.

In the Swim

Love it or hate it. Swimsuit season is here. You can cover it all up or figure out a way to accentuate the positive and have a great time. Let’s face it, we all have figure flaws, so let’s figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to baring it all … well, almost!
“The first decision is whether to wear a one-piece or two-piece suit,” says Jill Martin, fashion expert and author of “Fashion for Dummies.”
“What you choose depends on what you’re comfortable in and what body part you want to show off or hide,” she says. “Get a one-piece suit if your belly is an area that you don’t feel comfortable revealing.”

The Red, White and Blue will adorn Fourth of July Parade

The Red, White and Blue will adorn Fourth of July Parade

The float with the huge lion on board will, once again, greet parade-goers at the Del Norte Lion’s Club’s 31st Annual Fourth of July parade on, of course, Fourth of July. Frank Ramirez, secretary/treasurer of the Del Norte Lion’s Club said that the parade is probably the oldest in El Paso, because it’s been held since 1979.
“We’re the oldest, because, for 31 years, we’ve grown from a few spectators to more than 10,000 today,” Ramirez said. “We’ve also grown from about 25 floats and other entries to more than 130.”

NASCAR DADS – After helping sons to the top, fathers must adjust to the sidelines

NASCAR DADS – After helping sons to the top, fathers must adjust to the sidelines

Posted on 18. Jun, 2010 by .

Father’s Day on the NASCAR circuit is an interesting time. Most drivers in today’s Sprint Cup Series got there in large part because their fathers supported their racing from the beginning and in many cases paid for the race cars they drove in attracting the attention of the big NASCAR teams.
But once a driver reaches the top levels of the sport, there’s really no place for dad.
Some, like Joey Logano’s father Tom Logano, are very visible at the track and remain a big part of their son’s racing. But that can be problematic, as illustrated by the controversy surrounding the elder Logano’s participation in a post-race incident at Pocono Raceway between his son and Kevin Harvick.

Shoulder blades power the swing

Shoulder blades power the swing

The scapula or shoulder blade is your back’s contribution to the three-bone shoulder joint. The other two bones are the clavicle and the humerus, the big bone in your upper arm. The scapula is attached to the rotator cuff, a group of four muscles that operates the shoulder. The ends of these muscles join tendons that in turn connect to your arm bone, so basically, the scapula moves your shoulder and your arm.

Tom DeLonge Leads the ‘Dramatically Different’ blink-182

Tom DeLonge Leads the ‘Dramatically Different’ blink-182

Posted on 18. Jun, 2010 by .

As the lead singer, guitarist and frontman in blink-182, Tom DeLonge has become rich and famous by co-writing, recording and performing songs that celebrate the joys and angst of adolescence, ideally with as much gleeful profanity as possible.

As the lead singer, guitarist and periodic keyboardist in Angels & Airwaves (or AVA, as fans call it), he is able to use his wealth and fame to co-write, record and perform a far more serious style of music that focuses on such major issues as war, peace, idealism and existential dread. To underscore his serious intentions, there isn’t a hint of profanity in Angels & Airwaves’ lyrics, which accompany songs that take their cues from moody art rock far more than they do from punk rock.

A GOOD FATHER WILL GUIDE HIS DAUGHTER ON THE RIGHT PATH

A GOOD FATHER WILL GUIDE HIS DAUGHTER ON THE RIGHT PATH

QUESTION: Is there a way I as a father can influence my daughter’s attitude toward boys? If she chooses to marry, she will need to understand men and know how to relate to them. Is that something I should be thinking about?

DR. DOBSON: You bet it is. Long before a girl finds her first real boyfriend or falls in love, her attitude toward men has been shaped quietly by her father. Why? Because the father-daughter relationship sets the stage for all future romantic involvements.

The girls from “Sex and the City” may have spent their summer in the desert, but what are us girls stuck in the hot city supposed to wear? We can definitely take some cues from the fashionable foursome in the latest “Sex and the City 2″ movie, says Whitney Kessler, assistant editor of Stylesight (www.stylesight.com), a trend forecasting service.

Fork in the road As Sprint, Nationwide schedules diverge, choices must be made

Fork in the road As Sprint, Nationwide schedules diverge, choices must be made

Posted on 11. Jun, 2010 by .

About this time of the NASCAR season, when the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series schedules find the two circuits running in different venues across the country, the debate resumes about the wisdom of Cup drivers flying back and forth to run Nationwide races.
Some feel it distracts from a driver’s Cup efforts, and that’s one of the reasons Kyle Busch dropped off the Nationwide tour even though he was leading the series in wins with five and just one point out of the championship lead heading into last weekend’s Nationwide race at Nashville Superspeedway.
History has shown that cross-country trips tend to produce a lot of wins for drivers, in both Cup and Nationwide, but they don’t seem to help one’s chances of winning a Cup title.
