New NASCAR rules get vetted at Talladega races
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
“How did the new spoiler and NASCAR’s instructions to the boys to ‘have at it’ work out at Talladega Superspeedway?”
A: NASCAR seemed to get it right on this one. Last fall at Talladega, drivers were told in the drivers meeting that there would be punishment for aggressive driving, and long stretches of the race were considered by many to be boring compared to previous Talladega events.

Putting part 3 The Stroke
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
The mechanics of good putting depend on both direction and distance control. As you align your body and aim the putter face, you automatically fix the geometry of direction. Once you are aimed correctly, all you need to do is apply the correct amount of force for distance.
Rather than call these “rules of the stroke,” let’s call them guidelines, a less-restrictive term that provides a big tent under which I house the many theories on how to putt. And there are many.

James Moody: Resting on His Laurels? No Way, Nohow
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
Anybody who thinks you can’t teach an old master new tricks clearly needs to catch up with James Moody.
The jazz saxophone legend, who turned 85 on March 26 and performs June 23 in New York’s Carnegie Hall, has been spending much of his spare time relearning the flute, thanks to a tip from flutist Holly Hofmann. Never mind that, in 1956, Moody recorded the acclaimed album “Flute ‘N the Blues” or that he has since played the instrument with much of the same skill and distinction he’s brought to the tenor, alto and soprano saxophones.

Dog can help child avoid weight gain
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
• With childhood obesity a continued concern, one study suggests that having a dog in the family can help to motivate kids to get moving. Among children 5 to 6 years of age, a family dog reduces the likelihood of obesity by half. Not only are children with dogs more likely to walk, but they’re also more likely to spend more time with the pet and less on the couch watching TV or playing video games.

CHILDREN THRIVE IN LOVING, DISCIPLINED HOMES
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
QUESTION: If you had to choose between a very authoritarian style of parenting versus one that is permissive and lax, which would you prefer? Which is healthier for kids?
DR. DOBSON: Both extremes leave their characteristic scars on children, and I would be hard-pressed to say which is more damaging. At the oppressive end of the continuum, a child suffers the humiliation of total domination.

Resume writing is an art form, and all resumes are not created equal
Posted on 30. Apr, 2010 by admin.
Lynda Lucas believes that the most critical element that should go into anyone’s resume is the truth! “In order to show our clients in the best light, they’ve got to be telling us the truth,” Lucas said. “You can’t lie on your resume, because, eventually, you’ll be discovered.”
Such was uncovered recently in a high-profile case in El Paso, when Dr. Paul Shrode, El Paso County’s Medical Examiner, is alleged to have lied on his resume. Shrode, allegedly falsified his resume by claiming that he is “board certified in forensic pathology” when, in fact, he is not.

Trading Spaces Swapping drivers presents challenges and opportunities
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
The full details of Kasey Kahne’s move to Hendrick Motorsports have yet to be revealed, but there’s a consensus in NASCAR circles about how things will work out in the end.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., one of the four drivers now running for Hendrick in the Cup Series, summed up the feelings of many in his comments to reporters at Texas Motor Speedway last week.
“I’m sure whatever Rick [Hendrick] chooses to do will be a smart way to take care of it,” Earnhardt said.

Putting part 2 GRIP AND STANCE
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
Unlike the full swing, putting is an upper-body-oriented motion with limited wrist action. Therefore, the grip and stance are very different from the ones you use on your full swing.
Start by placing the right side of the grip against the lifeline of your right hand and resting your right thumb on the top side of the putter grip. In the same manner, place the left side of the grip against the lifeline of your left hand and put your left thumb on the top side
of the putter grip.

Mehldau Crosses (Music) Party Lines: Pianist’s Resume Goes Way Beyond Jazz
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
Jazz, classical and rock don’t intersect for Brad Mehldau so much as they co-exist as happy equals that provide him with endless inspiration and sustenance. Justly hailed as one of the greatest jazz pianists of his generation, he reaches across idioms whenever the spirit moves him.
“Anything that I love musically, I listen to obsessively. For pleasure, spiritual fulfillment and edification. In that order,” said Mehldau, who is embarked on a North American duo tour with top saxophonist Joshua Redman that runs through late May.

Pets Go Green, Again Easy Earth-friendly tips for animal lovers
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
Does a renewed interest in “green” products mean the economy’s improving? We’re not sure, but we’re still delighted to see retailers and pet owners again trying to reduce the “carbon pawprint” of pets.
Recently, the national chain Petco put on an event at its more than 1,000 stores to promote products that are more eco-friendly — an event in which the PetConnection team was involved. But, of course, it’s possible to do a lot with what you have by making a few good decisions.
Here are a few tips:

A TOUGH CHILDHOOD CAN LEAD TO SUCCESS LATER IN LIFE
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
QUESTION: Do childhood traumas inevitably twist and warp a person in the adult years?
DR. DOBSON: No. It is well known that difficult childhoods leave some people wounded and disadvantaged, but for others, they fuel great achievement and success. The difference appears to be a function of individual temperaments and resourcefulness. In a classic study called “Cradles of Eminence,” Victor and Mildred Goertzel investigated the home backgrounds of three hundred highly successful people.

Spring into Color
Posted on 23. Apr, 2010 by admin.
What’s an instant way to transform your wardrobe and your attitude? As some of our Southern mamas use to tell us: “It’s time to suck in your stomach and put some color on!”
“Color is an incredible fashion tool that’s often taken for granted,” says style expert Andy Paige, author of “Style on a Shoestring.” “We are all naturally attracted to color,” she says, “and it stimulates emotional, physical and even behavioral responses. Every fashion decision we make has a color connection that sends a message to others and reflects our personality.”
